Located on the Great Plains region of the Midwestern United States, Nebraska is known for its prairies and farmlands. The state is an important producer of sorghum, soybeans, maize, pork and beef. Beyond agriculture, the local economy of the state is rooted in freight transportation, insurance, IT, telecommunications and manufacturing.
The state has a rich Native American history; numerous cultures and indigenous groups lived along the states rivers for thousands of years prior to European exploration. Notable tribes to populate the region include the Missouria, Ponca, Omaha, Pawnee, Otoe, and Lakota. Entirely landlocked, the State was initially explored by French explorers in 1682.Originally the area was part of what France had designated as the Louisiana Territory. Following the United States purchase of the territory, Nebraska was incorporated into the Missouri Territory. It was officially recognized as its own territory in 1854 and was granted statehood in 1867. A catalyst to this was the Homestead Act which gave free land in the state to settlers willing to migrate to the area. The population of the state further increased following the Civil War during the Great Migration, a movement that saw over five million African Americans from the rural south disperse through the West, Midwest and Northeast.
Bordered by Iowa, South Dakota, Missouri, Colorado, and Wyoming, Nebraska is known for being home to the College World Series, College Football at Lincoln Stadium, Steakhouses in Omaha, the world’s largest rail yard and kayking in the Niobrara River.
The largest metropolitan area in Nebraska is Omaha, followed by the Lincoln area. The population of the state is just under two million, 141,000 of who are veterans and 17,530 active duty military members. Offutt Air Force base is located in the state. The installation is the host site for the 55th wing of the Air Force’s Air Combat Command. Additionally, the Strategic Command Headquarters, Air Force Weather Agency and Defense Finance and Accounting Service call the base home.
When a veteran or active-duty service member opts to purchase a home in Nebraska using a VA-backed home loan, a termite inspection is required.
