Putnam County is located in North Eastern Florida. Encompassing 827 square miles of total area, the county has a population of approximately 74,000. Putnam is adjacent to Bradford, Alachua, Marion, Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns and Clay Counties. Only two cities and three towns make up the county with the rest of the area composed of unincorporated communities. The largest city and county seat is Palatka. The county was created in January of 1849, making it the 28th county in Florida. Named for Benjamin Putnam, the grandson of Israel Putnam and soldier of the First Seminole War. Putnam left his mark on the state as a Florida legislator and the first president of the Florida Historic Society.

Situated between Jacksonville and Gainesville, Putnam County is noted for its abundance of sinkhole lakes, notably Lake Barco. Unconsolidated deposits on the surface of Lake Barco have collapsed into the soluble limestone of the Floridan aquifer, creating the sinkhole effect. The climate of Palatka is humid subtropical. The local weather of Putnam County is impacted by its proximity to the Gulf Stream. Two major seasons are prominent in the area; hot and rainy and dry and moderate. The wetter season occurs from June through September, with the drier season lasting from October through May. Ocala National Forest is partially within the boundaries of the county. Two State Parks, Ravine Gardens, and Dunns Creek are also situated in Putnam.

The City of Palatka is notable for the numerous architectural styles found throughout. Historical districts prominently feature Victorian, Colonia Revival, Art Deco, Classical Revival and Prairie School buildings. Palatka has a light hearted vibe with multiple festivals taking place over the course of the year. The Florida Azalea Festival and Blue Crab Festival are perhaps the most popular county-wide celebrations.

Veterans in Putnam County

Putnam County has a relatively small veteran population of roughly 7,000. The Putnam County Veteran Services Office maintains three offices throughout the county. The main office operates in Palatka Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Interlachen Office is open from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and the Crescent City Office is open on Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. The office functions to assist veterans with claims applications benefits appeals and counseling for specific services.

The Palatka Community Based Outpatient Clinic provides medical care to veterans living in Putnam County. Among the healthcare services offered at the clinic are phlebotomy, wound care, nutritional, social work, psychiatry, psychological health care smoking cessation, nursing, wound care, diabetic and hypertension education. The clinic holds hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The clinic is new having opened in 2010. Patients in need of specialty care not provided at the clinic are referred to the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville.

Veteran property owners in Putnam County can qualify for a property tax exemption if they have a service-related disability that has rendered a disability rating of ten percent or higher. Under this circumstance, veterans are entitled to a property tax exemption of $5,000. Veterans with a complete disability are entitled to full exemption.
