Originally called New River County at the time of its inception, it was renamed after Richard Bradford, a Civil War captain who holds the distinction of being the first confederate officer from Florida to be killed in the war. As the primary training station for the Florida National Guard and Florida Army reservists, Camp Blanding, found in Starke, is the home of numerous support units, including the 211th infantry, and the 20th Special Forces Group. Although the number of personnel on site varies, yearly, the facility can accommodate up to 3,000 people.
