Since 1990, Flagler County has experienced a growth in population that is among the highest among all American counties. Since the year 2000, the number of residents living in the county has increased by 93 percent to 95,987. Located on the eastern Florida coast, Flagler County is perhaps most noted for its abundance of gardens and parks, including the Seminole Woods Neighborhood Park, Old Dixie Park Hidden Trails Park and the Graham Swamp Preserve. Bunnell, the county seat, is widely regarded as having a deep historical feel; the Old Bunnell State Bank Building was built in 1910, while the George Moody House was constructed in 1917, as was the William Henry Deen House.
Adjacent to Putnam County and Volusia County, the climate of Flagler County provides visitors from the north-east a vital escape from frigid winter conditions. Boasting a sub-tropical climate, Flagler County averages 229 sunny days a year, on average. The summer conditions may explain why Flagler County has enjoyed as much athletic success as it has, in the previous two years; three different high schools in the county have sent baseball teams to the state tournament.
The economy is largely driven by retail, nearly 30 percent of residents work in the sales industry. More than 30 mid-sized companies operate within Palm Coast, the largest employer being Palm Coast Data, which has over 1,000 employees.
In large part because of the influx of new residents over the past two decades, political leanings among locals is varied, sometimes the county votes Democrat, sometimes it votes republican.
The median home income in the county is $48,134, and the median home price is $157,100. Although the unemployment rate of 8.3 percent is higher than the national average, it has dropped from a rate of 16 percent in 2008. Of further cause for optimism id the recent job growth of more than three percent.
