Carved out of Duval County, New Years Eve 1858, with the brink of Civil War clouding its early years, and the Seminole Wars of the 1830’s happening nearby, Clay County had a rough start. Ironically, as automobiles became widely commercialized in the 1920’s tourism again picked up.
With a population of 190,865, Clay County is proud of its history. Locals are privileged to have the Clay County Historical Society Museum, which was originally a doctor’s office, and the Military Museum of North Florida. Famous for its D-Day exhibit, the museum was chosen to display items from its collection at the Coke Zero 400 race in 2013.
Recently, the county has experienced a new wave of population growth. Over the past decade-and-a-half, the population has expanded by 36 percent. Cited reasons for this growth included an unemployment rate of less than five percent and a job growth of 4-and-a-half percent. The cost of living in the county is 4 percent below the national average. As nearby Jacksonville has grown in popularity, so too has Clay, acting as a suburb for people commuting into Jacksonville for work.
