Located in northeastern Connecticut, Tolland County has a population of 152,691. Made up of 13 incorporated towns, the county is famous for being the home of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Gene Pitney, nineteenth century still painter Charles Ethan Porter, Super Bowl Champion Bill Romanowski and former Virginia Governor Mark Warner. Notable landmarks in the county include the New England Civil War Museum, which contains the Hirst Brothers collection, the Burpee Collection, the Kilbourne Newell Collection and the Charles Weston collection of civil war artifacts. Included in the museum are over 1000 volumes of Civil War era literature and 128 original copies of the War of the Rebellion compilation of official records of both the Confederate and Union armies. Originally formed in 1785, Tolland County covers over 417 total square miles. The three largest cities in the county are Vernon, Mansfield, and Ellington.

The County has a diverse population with the two largest ethnic groups being Irish and Italian. Interestingly, Ellington became a center for Jewish immigration. During the 18 and 1900’s Jewish farmers flocked to the area because of Baron Maurice de Hirsch’s Jewish Colonization Association, which built a synagogue in the county. The synagogue: Congregation Knesseth Israel is still open to this day and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ellington is of further note as setting up the first recorded roadside memorial. In 1812, ten-year-old Samuel Knight was killed in a cartwheel accident; a stone in the southwest corner of town was set up as a memorial.

Like the other counties in the state residents of Tolland can easily access major cities and bordering states like New York and Massachusetts. Great for residents who wish to avoid big city life, Toland was previously named by Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in America in the category of small towns.
