Desoto County, Florida va homes for saleFamed Spanish Explorer Hernando DeSoto, 620 men, 220 horses and nine vessels landed in South Tampa Bay in 1539. Before moving through Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and the Carolinas, DeSoto’s expedition travelled north along the western coast of Florida. Established in 1887 from Manatee County, DeSoto County (along with Hernando County) is named in honor of the Spaniard. Until 1921, Charlotte, Glades, Hardee and Highlands County were encompassed by DeSoto County.

With a population of only 34,862, the largest and only incorporated city in the county is Arcadia. Demonstrating the resilience of the county’s namesake, Arcadia was nearly destroyed by the great fire of 1905. The damage was largely enhanced because the city did not have a fire department or water delivery system at the time. 110 years after the fire, Arcadia has a picturesque quaintness not seen in many other places.

Hosting three rodeos, Aviation Day, the largest collection of antique dealers in the state, and several parades (Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Cinco De Mayo, Independence Day, October Homecoming, Veterans Day) DeSoto County has a reputation as an exciting place. Canoeing and shark tooth hunting enthusiasts are able to take advantage of the Peace River, which feeds into the Charlotte Harbor Estuary.

The median home price of $88,300 has been largely attributed to the 8 percent population growth over the previous decade-and-a-half. The cost of living is also 15 percent less than the national average. Of further appeal to potential homeowners in the county is the unemployment rate of 5.7 percent.
