Located in Rhode Island, the state containing the smallest area and eighth littlest population in the country, Bristol County, with only 25 square miles of land is the third smallest county in the entire country. The population of the county is roughly 50,000, making it the least populous of Rhode Island’s four counties. Containing Bristol, the county seat and largest city, Barrington and Warren, the present day borders of the county were established in 1746. Interestingly, Bristol County Rhode Island borders Bristol County Massachusetts. In total 22 counties in the country border another county of the same name. The county originally was encompassed by Plymouth County Massachusetts. After the land transfer, it was the center of a long-standing land dispute between states. The county holds historical significance to this nation’s history, as the first battle of King Phillips War occurred in the land now belonging to Bristol County. During the Revolutionary War, the British naval fleet subjected the county to cannon fire on two separate occasions.
CNN and Money Magazine have previously named Barrington on their top 100 places to live in the United States. The small city of less than 20,000 placed as the sixth best on the list. Of academic note, Bristol is home to Roger Williams University. Warren contains multiple notable waterfront buisnesses, Blount Seafood, Anchorage Inc and Blount Marine perhaps most prominent. The county has the oldest continuous Independence Day parade and celebration. The annual festival dates back to 1777.

A sailing paradise, Bristol County is the site of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The museum honors outstanding achievers in the field of sailing competitions.
