Located on the southern coast of Massachusetts, Bristol County was once the premier whaling port of the nineteenth century. At the time, the city of New Bedford, which is the largest city in the county was known as “the city that lit the world” because of the oil produced from whales,. Veterans in Bristol County
Bristol County has one of the larger veteran populations in Massachusetts. Over 32,000 veterans make their primary residence in the county. The majority of individual townships in the county have their own Veteran Services Department. The majority of area vets live in the City of New Bedford. The New Bedford Department of Veterans’ Services has a stated mission of advocating on behalf of all veterans living in the Commonwealth. Providing this populous with quality support services, as well as running an emergency financial aid program for veterans and their dependents in need. Among the areas, that the department assists veterans with are bonuses, burial benefits, record retention, employment, tax information, outreach educational assistance, annuity and property tax exemptions.
Disabled veterans who live in Bristol County are entitled to a property tax exemption under several circumstances. If a veteran has a service-related disability rating of ten percent, they are eligible for an exemption of $400. Veterans who have lost the use of one hand, foot or eye are entitled to an exemption of $750. The exemption amount increases to $1,250 if hands, feet, and eyes have lost functionality. Veterans with a total disability qualify for an exemption of $1,000.
Health and wellness services are accessible for county veterans at the New Bedford Outpatient Clinic and the New Bedford Vet Center in Fairhaven.
The Community Based OPC offers comprehensive primary medical care. Renovated in 2014, the facility includes a physical therapy clinic, women’s health exam rooms, and an improved reception area. The clinic provides physical therapy, nutrition counseling and education, mental health services, including psychosocial evaluations, group and family counseling and substance abuse counseling. The facility also offers complete pharmaceutical services and specialty neurology and audiology. A representative from the VA Regional Office is onsite monthly, and functions to answer questions and provide advice in regards to VA benefits and educational opportunities.
The New Bedford Vet Center in Fair Haven is an additional resource for veterans looking for counseling options. The center operates Monday through Friday and specializes in trauma related issues.
