Berkshire County, Massachusetts VA Home Loan Info

Massachusetts VA home loan limitsThe 2019 $0 down, VA home loan limit for Berkshire County is $484,350.

The birthplace of famed social reformer and feminist Susan B. Anthony, Berkshire County has a historical place in New England’s traditions of logging, subsistence farming, idealism, and intellectualism. Often simply referred to as just “The Berkshires”, the county has a rare scenic beauty elusive to the majority of the country. The three separate mountain ranges that make up the Berkshire Hills are separated by Housatonic River and the Hoosic River. Part of the Appalachian Mountains, this range encompasses the Bash Bish Falls, the highest waterfall in the state. The summit provides a clear view of the state that extends into New York. Mount Greylock, the third range of the Berkshires with an elevation of 3,487 feet is the highest point in Massachusetts. With the Appalachian Trail running through the area, and both Savoy Mountain State Forest and Mount Washington State Forest within the boundaries of Berkshire County, the area has an old world feel, a trait that has remained unchanged since the Mahican tribe first settled in the area.

Formed in 1761, Berkshire County was originally traded by Native American tribes to the English for 460 pounds, three barrels of cider, and 30 quarts of rum. The county has a population of 130,000. The majority of residents live in the county seat of Pittsfield. Berkshire Community College is located in Pittsfield, and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is in North Adams. The small town is relevant to American literature as famed author Herman Melville penned Moby Dick while living in Pittsfield.

Veterans in Berkshire County

Berkshire County is home to almost 11,000 veterans. Because the county exists only as a historical, geographic region, no county government operates within the county. In July of 2000, the local government was dissolved, and state agencies assumed all functions of the local government. Because of this, the state Department of Veterans’ Services is an important resource for local veterans. This agency works as an advocate for former military members. The office helps with securing entitlements, filling claims, issuing referrals and aiding this populous in the areas of education, housing, and health and well-being.

Additionally, veterans living in Berkshire County can receive healthcare services at the Pittsfield Community-Based Outpatient Clinic. The clinic provides primary care, chronic and non-emergency medical treatment, immunizations, mental health treatment encompassing diagnostic evaluation, individual group and family psychotherapy and referral to alternative community resources and inpatient treatment. PTSD treatment is accessible at the clinic to veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The clinic operates a patient call center, connecting clients with representatives and making appointment scheduling easy and providing automated pharmaceutical options.

Disabled veterans who own property in Massachusetts may qualify for a property tax exemption. The exemption amount varies by the severity of the disability. Veterans with a ten percent disability rating are entitled to an exemption of $400. The amount increases to $750 if the veteran has lost the use of one hand, foot or eye. Veterans who have lost the use of eyes, hands or feet are entitled to an exemption of $1,250. Veterans who suffer from a permanent disability are eligible for an exemption of $1,000.
