Founded in 1889, Yuma County was created from a portion of Washington County, Colo. The county has a total area of 2,369 square miles. Yuma is located within the Colorado Plains, making it an excellent location for agriculture. For a peaceful setting with some of the cleanest air, it doesn’t get much better than Yuma County.
Bonny Lake State Park in Yuma County was created in 1966. The center point of Bonny Lake State Park is the Bonny Reservoir, a 2,200 acre body of water. The park is the home of over 300 species of birds, making it a great place for bird watchers. Bald eagles, Canadian geese, and sandhill cranes have all been known to make their home in Bonny Lake State Park. Other species of wildlife found in the park include beaver, cottontail rabbit, deer, and much more.
The Arikaree River flows through Yuma County. The river is a great place to cool off during the summer heat. The river also makes for great fishing and boating opportunities.
The current population in Yuma County is 10,202 residents with a veteran population of 630. The median household income is $44,308, and the median housing cost is $136,600. Property tax exemption benefits are available for disabled veterans. For those that qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 in the actual value of their primary residence will be exempt.
