Veterans in Worcester County
With a veteran population that exceeds 50,000, Worcester County has the second highest concentration of veterans out of the 14 counties of Massachusetts. The Worcester County Veterans’ Service Division works as an advocate for veterans living in the county. The mission of the division is to assist eligible veterans and their dependants secure immediate financial aid, medical help, and referral services for issues pertaining to housing, employment, health, and education. The division works in conjunction with the Veteran’s Administration, Social Security Office and specific employment agencies. The staff also functions in the capacity of a liaison to the Worcester Veterans Council and the Armed Forces Committee. Additionally, the division is responsible for sponsoring the Veterans and Memorial Day parades in the county.
Area veterans suffering from trauma-related mental health issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and substance abuse can find solace at the Worcester Vet Center. The center offers readjustment counseling. Open Monday through Friday, veterans can receive individual or group based psychotherapy.
In terms of medical service, veterans have access to the Worcester Community Based Outpatient Clinic as well as the Fitchburg Community Based Outpatient Clinic. Both clinics work to ensure eligible veterans receive compassionate and effective medical treatment. The clinic in Fitchburg is staffed by a physician, two nurse practitioners, a nurse, licensed practical nurse, and patient service assistant. The clinic offers primary care, mental health service, and lab work.

The county honors veterans with the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, which is located in the city of Worcester. Dedicated in 2002, the scenic four-acre memorial is situated in the midst of a pond, fountain, and walking path. A dignified backdrop that promotes contemplative reflections, three monuments are encompassed at the memorial. The monuments are called The Place of Flags, The Place of Words, and The Place of Names.

Veterans suffering from a service-related disability can qualify for exemptions ranging between $400 and $1,250. The exemption amount is determined by the severity of the disability.
