Established in 1729 as Kings County, carved from Providence Plantations, Washington County was renamed in 1781. Located in southern Rhode Island, the county is also known as South County. The county has a population of 127,000. In addition to being influenced by the English, Indian trading posts lead to early settlement influences from the Dutch. Originally, both the Netherlands and Great Britain had claims on Washington County. The county is the largest by area in Rhode Island. However, it is the smallest of any of the 50 largest counties by state. Numerous national protected areas fall within the county boundaries. These include Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, and the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge. The county seat of Washington County is South Kingstown. However, like the other four counties in Rhode Island, there is limited county government. All local government functions are conducted by the state or individual cities, with the exception of administrative and corrections boundaries.
