Made from portions of Macon, Marion, and Talbot counties, Taylor County was officially created by the Georgia General Assembly on January 15, 1852. Taylor County was the 98th county created in Georgia. Named for 12th President of the United States, Zachary Taylor, Taylor County has a surface area of 380 square miles. The county is rich in history and provides a laid-back lifestyle for those looking for the hometown feel. You won’t find loud cars or air pollution in Taylor County! The total population is 8,442, including a veteran population of 668.
Taylor County is known for the vast abundance of wildlife in the area. Hunters are sure to enjoy the number of trophy animals that can be found in Taylor County. White-tailed deer, wild turkey, eastern cottontail, bobcat, and many more animals can be found in the county. There are several locations listed on the National Register of the Historic Places. One of these locations is the Taylor County Courthouse. The courthouse was built in 1935 and still stands in the county seat of Butler, Ga. The courthouse is a two-story brick building surrounded by the lush greenery of Taylor County. Other Nationally Registered Historic Places in Taylor County include the Mauk School, Ferdinand A. Ricks House, and United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Taylor County has a thriving school district consisting of two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Taylor County High School holds the nation’s record for most consecutive girl’s high school basketball games won, winning 132 consecutive games. Join the community for one of the games held by Taylor County High School’s sports teams.
There is a lot of opportunity for children’s recreation in Taylor County. The Taylor County Recreation Department hosts both baseball and softball tournaments. The Recreation Department also offers t-ball, football, cheerleading, and basketball teams. For other types of activities, the Recreation Department provides a walking track, playgrounds, and a picnic pavilion.
