Made up of grassy farmlands, lush forests, and sparkling streams, Taliaferro County is one of the most beautiful counties in Georgia. The county was created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 24, 1825. Made from portions of Wilkes, Greene, Hancock, Oglethorpe, and Warren counties, Taliaferro was named for an officer in the American Revolution named Benjamin Taliaferro. Several films have been set and filmed in Taliaferro County. The total population is 1,693, including a veteran population of 104.
Taliaferro County is the basin of the Savannah River, giving it excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, and much more! Picturesque views of the Savannah River can be seen from one of its many shores. Campers frequently enjoy spending the night around the river to enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water flowing. The A.H. Stephens Historic Park is one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas in Taliaferro County. There is a museum on site that contains Georgia’s largest collection of Civil War artifacts. Rich in history, Taliaferro County is the home to several locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Standing in the county since around 1840, Liberty Hall is a historic house where prominent political figure, Alexander H. Stephens, once lived. Liberty Hall is now a museum that showcases the early life of Stephens. Other Nationally Registered Historic Places include the Chapman-Steed House, Locust Grove Cemetery, and Taliaferro County Courthouse.
Many Hollywood films have been set and shot in Taliaferro County. The most recent movie shot in the county was Sweet Home Alabama, starring Resse Witherspoon. Other films shot in Taliaferro County include Get Low, Coward of the County, and Paris Trout.
