With a population of less than 45,000, Sullivan County is the second least populated county in New Hampshire. The only incorporated city in the county is Claremont, although the census designated place of Newport functions as the county seat. With a total area of 552 square miles, Sullivan County is the third smallest county by area in New Hampshire. Adjacent to Grafton, Merrimack, Hillsborough, Cheshire, Windham and Windsor Counties, Sullivan County is centrally located, allowing for easy access to the rest of the state. Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site falls within the borders of the county. The surviving spouse of a veteran killed while on active duty can receive a property tax credit between $700 and $2,000.
Disabled veterans are entitled to a property tax credit of $700 if they are permanently and totally disabled as a result of their service.
A permanently and totally disabled veteran who is suffering from blindness, paraplegia, or double amputation as a result of their service, and who is living in a home that was specially adapted by The Department of Veterans Affairs is completely exempt from property taxes.
