About Stanislaus County

The first European to reach the county was an explorer named Gabriel Moraga who saw the area in 1806. Eventually, Stanislaus County was named after the Estanislao River, which was itself named in honor of the mission-educated Native American chief who led a series of battles against the Mexican troops until his eventual defeat by General Mariano Vallejo in 1826.

Today, many of the county’s residents have moved to the area from San Francisco due to the more affordable housing. This increase in population has led to a growth in the local economy and employment industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and retail trade. Therefore, the most common occupations in the county are in the sales, office, and management occupations.

In addition to its growing workforce, the county is also home to a strong educational system with its 24 school districts, which offer education for students pre-k to 12th grade. Furthermore, the county is also home to higher education institutions like Modesto Junior College, California State University-Stanislaus, and Brightwood College-Modesto.

Stanislaus county is also a great place for the arts and entertainment industries with facilities like the Carnegie Arts Center, the Gallo Center for the Arts, and the Turlock Community Theater.
