Named after Civil War General, John Sedgwick, Sedgwick County is the furthest northeastern region in Colorado. The county was once a major hunting and camping ground for the Cheyenne, Sioux, Pawnee, and Arapahoe Indian Tribes. Early pioneers travelled to Sedgwick County in hopes of finding gold during the Colorado Gold Rush.
Fort Sedgwick is a historical site located in Sedgwick County. Civil War soldiers once used this fort. It still features the original sod buildings and wood structures. Fort Sedgwick was made popular after being mentioned in the film, Dances With Wolves. The fort is currently private property and is distinguished by a roadside marker.
Sedgwick County has several historical trails going through it, including the Pony Express Trail and the South Platte Trail. The Pony Express Trail is a great place for visitors and residents to see the route taken by early mail carriers. The Town of Julesburg, one of the communities of Sedgwick County, was one of the stops of the original Pony Express.
