Located on the far eastern portion of the Florida Panhandle, Santa Rosa County is adjacent to both Escambia County Florida and Escambia County Alabama. A border county, this area of Florida is often called “LA”, short for “Lower Alabama.” With many of its original American inhabitants migrating from Alabama, the county has numerous cultural influences from the Cotton State, perhaps most notably in the local culinary offerings. The county was formed in 1842 and was named for Saint Rose of Viterbo. The population of the county is 161,096, and the total size of the area is 1,174 square miles. The county is divided into three regions: South Santa Rosa, Central Santa Rosa and North Santa Rosa, the county seat and largest city is Milton. Santa Rosa County only encompasses two incorporated cities and one town, with the rest of the area being unincorporated communities. The County contains a portion of the Nationally Protected Choctawhatchee National Forest. Interestingly, the county was dry until 2007, meaning the sale of alcohol was prohibited.
Historically called “Scratch Ankle,” “Hard Scrabble”, and “Jernigan’s Landing,” Milton has a reputation as an athletic hub, producing several former and current professional athletes. The Santa Rosa Historical Society operates multiple facilities that offer a window into the past. Among these offerings are the West Florida Rail Road Museum, Imogene Theater and the Blackwater River Park and Boardwalk in the Downtown area.

Santa Rosa County has a veteran population of nearly 25,000. The county is known for its outward appreciation of the military. Veterans Memorial Plaza is dedicated to the memory and sacrifice of United States military members. Chronicling American military history, the plaza contains numerous panels, statues and plaques paying tribute to every branch of the military. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier made of white marble functions to honor all of the soldiers who gave their lives on foreign soil.
The positive sentiment towards the military permeating the community is perhaps a result of Naval Air Station Whiting Field, which is operational and is located in Milton. The base contains three individual full usage airfields. The Air Operations Department supports 1.5 million flight operations per year, amounting to more than 160,000 flight hours annually. A training site, the base has a primary objective to develop the finest pilots in the military. The Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard all use the base. Famously, the Blue Angels are based out of NAS Whiting Field. The base trains more than 1,200 students yearly.
In addition to its military operations, NAS Whiting Field serves as an intake site for pre-discharge claims assistance. The Veterans Service Office of Santa Rosa County provides veterans with assistance in filing for disability and pension benefits, education benefits, life insurance information and death benefits. The office is located in Milton.
Disabled veterans, who own homes in Santa Rosa County, can qualify for a property tax exemption amounting to $5,000 if they have a disability rating of 10 percent or higher. Veterans, who suffer from a complete disability, are entitled to a total exemption.
