Escambia County is noted for its county seat of Pensacola. Originally settled by the Muskogean people, Pensacola is distinct for having changed ownership between the Spanish, French and British and United States thirteen separate times. Because of the rampant change in occupying nation, the city is affectionately nicknamed the “City of Five Flags.” Located on the western portion of the Florida Panhandle, Escambia County was created in 1821. Near the border between Florida and Alabama, notably influenced by the Southern States of this country, many refer to the area as “LA”, for lower Alabama.
The county population of 297,619 ranks it as one of the larger counties in the state. Pensacola contains at total population of 51,923, thought the metropolitan area is made up by nearly 500,000 people. Tourism plays a prominent role in the county, the Santa Rosa Island and Gulf Island National Seashore, has pristine white sanded beaches, enhanced by the idyllic summer temperatures. Escambia County has an average of 230 sunny days a year. Winters, although occasionally cool due to wind currents are usually mild.
With a number of annual festivals in the downtown area of Pensacola, including the Pensacola Seafood Festival and the Pensacola Crawfish Festival, the seafood in the area is widely considered among the tops in the country.
The county is home to the University of West Florida, giving it a unique dichotomy between college town and military town. The cost of living in Escambia County is 10 percent below the national average. The unemployment rate is below the United States average and job growth as of late has been positive. Veterans in Escambia County
Known as “The Cradle of Naval Aviation,” Escambia County is considered one of the most military-friendly cities in the country. Three military facilities operate within the county, Corry Station Naval Technical Training Center, NAS Pensacola and Naval Hospital Pensacola.
Corry Station Naval Technical Training Center works in conjunction with the Department of Defense, in providing training to troops. As the center for naval information dominance (CID), the base is home to the 313th training squadron, 344th military intelligence battalion and the 325th fighting wing.
The Naval Air Station Pensacola is home to the famous Blue Angeles. Recognized as one of the premier naval installations in the country, with a mission of “leading by example” the base includes the 479th Flying Training Group, Air Education Command, 451st Flying training Squadron and the 479th Operations.
With over 175 years worth of continuous operation, Naval Hospital Pensacola is nearly as old as the state of Florida. Transformed into a highly modern installation, the hospital is capable of treating up to 100 patients at the same time. Providing a service for civilians and military personnel, roughly 2,000 medical specialists are staffed at Naval Hospital Pensacola.
Currently, over 40,000 veterans live in Escambia County. These veterans are provided services by the Pensacola Vet Center, as well as the Joint Ambulatory Care Center, also in Pensacola.
Veterans who own property in Escambia County, who suffered a service-related injury which has caused a disability rating of 10 percent are eligible to receive a property tax exemption of $5,000. A complete exemption is available to veterans who have suffered from a service-related 100 percent disability.
