With a population of 3,010,232, Orange County is the third most heavily populated county in California and the sixth most in the entire state. In terms of population density, only San Francisco County has a greater population per square mile. Thirty-four incorporated cities makeup the county and the three largest, Irvine, Santa Ana, and Anaheim have more than 200,000 residents each. Notable as housing the second-biggest Muslim community in the country, the overall county population is incredibly diverse. People from numerous backgrounds populate the area.

Incorporated in 1889, the county was named for the orange groves located all over the region. Originally, the Juaneno, Tongva and Luiseno tribes inhabited Orange County. Following American expansion through California, Cattle Ranching was the primary industry of the area; however, drought decimated ranching opportunities and slowed population growth in the 1860s. The discovery of silver in 1887 acted as a catalyst to renewed migration, inevitably causing the state legislature to divide Los Angeles County, thus forming Orange County.

Today, the local economy is driven by numerous Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the area, as well as by the shopping and tourism industries. Home to Disneyland, the second most heavily visited theme park in the world and Knott’s Berry Farm which draws roughly 7 million customers a year, Anaheim is the main tourist destination in the county and Irvine is the major business and financial hub.

Adjacent to the northwestern section of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and with 42 miles of coastline, Orange County is known as a hotbed for surfing and sunshine. Seal Beach and the Cleveland National Forest are partially within the boundaries of Orange County.

The median income for the area is $75,830, and the median household price is $612,000. The median home price of Orange County is significantly higher than it is in neighboring Riverside and San Diego Counties.

The Veteran population of the county is robust at 117,110. These veterans are able to take advantage of VFW post 3173 in Anaheim, post 10694 in Santa Ana and posts 6024 and 3801 in Mission Viejo (among others in the county). The North Orange County Vet Center further provides support services and healthcare to local veterans.

Veteran homeowners in Orange County are eligible to receive a property tax exemption of $4,000. Disabled veterans who suffer from a total disability, the loss of more than one limb or blindness qualify for a disabled veterans’ exemption that amounts to between $124,932 and $187,399, depending on personal income.
