Newton County was created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 24, 1821. Named for American Revolutionary Hero, Sergeant John Newton, Newton County is located in the heart of Georgia. The county has an excellent school system, including several higher education facilities. The current population of Newton County is 103,675, including a veteran population of 7,341.
Lake Varner Park is a local facility that is the home of the Cornish Creek Reservoir. The Reservoir is an excellent place to spend a warm summer day. The Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center is the perfect place for the true outdoors person. The Wildlife Center is 6,400 acres and is home to many different species of plants and animals. There are opportunities for hunting, fishing, archery and more! The shooting range at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center is a great place to practice your shot before going on a hunt. Camping lovers will enjoy the many facilities and resources for camping.
Another great park in Newton County is the Factory Shoals Park. Factory Shoals is located along the Alcovy River, making it the perfect place to relax and listen to the sounds of the flowing river. The beautiful park is a great place for fishing, swimming, hiking, and much more! River rafters are sure to enjoy the exciting rapids found in parts of the Alcovy River.
Several TV shows have made Newton County the setting for scenes. The Dukes of Hazzard, In the Heat of the Night, and Remember the Titans have all had scenes filmed in Newton County. More recently, the TV series The Vampire Diaries is being filmed in downtown Covington.
