With the tiny islands of Muskegetm and Tuckernuck, Nantucket forms Nantucket County. The least populous area in Massachusetts, the county has a population that barely exceeds 10,000. Previously called the “finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th and early 19th century New England seaport town” Nantucket offers a historical window into the past. Settled in 1641, the county has Algonquian roots. Derived from the Wampanoag word meaning in the midst of waters, the islands have been featured in many notorious works of American Literature. Moby Dick, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket Night Birds on Nantucket, have all been set or at least partially set in the county. The 1990s sitcom “Wings” was also set in Nantucket.
Despite its small size, the county has numerous cultural offerings with multiple galleries and museums. Considered an art colony, Nantucket is a hub for visual and performing arts. Artist such as Herman Melville, Nathaniel Philbrick, Fran Swift Chase and Theodore Robinson have all lived on Nantucket.
