Montezuma County has been settled since AD 600. It is the southwesternmost county in Colorado. Montezuma County was once only inhabited by the Ute and Navajo Tribes until settlers arrived in the 1870s. The county was created by the Colorado Legislature in April 1889. Montezuma County was named after a famous Aztec chief, named Moctezuma II.
There are a number of monuments in Montezuma that preserve ancient American Indian structures. One of these monuments is the Yucca House National Monument. Yuca House is located at the foot of Sleeping Ute Mountain and was once the site of a thriving Anasazi village.
