Montezuma County has been settled since AD 600. It is the southwesternmost county in Colorado. Montezuma County was once only inhabited by the Ute and Navajo Tribes until settlers arrived in the 1870s.  The county was created by the Colorado Legislature in April 1889. Montezuma County was named after a famous Aztec chief, named Moctezuma II.

There are a number of monuments in Montezuma that preserve ancient American Indian structures. One of these monuments is the Yucca House National Monument. Yuca House is located at the foot of Sleeping Ute Mountain and was once the site of a thriving Anasazi village. Other famous monuments in Montezuma County include the Mesa Verde National Park, the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, and the Hovenweep National Monument.

Visitors and residents like to walk the Trail of the Ancients, which highlights the cultural history of the southwestern Native American tribes. The Great Parks Bicycle Route and the Western Express Bicycle Route both pass through Montezuma County.
