Located in the Midwestern United States, Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 lakes. This designation is technically a misnomer as the state contains 11,843 lakes (greater than 10 acres in size). The state is home to 5,420,380 Minnesotans. Considered overly friendly, genial and positive, the colloquial term “Minnesota nice” has long been in use. This niceness probably stems from the large presence of Norwegians and Swedes in the area. A political outlier in the Midwest, Minnesota is a strongly left-leaning Democratic Party stronghold. The state is large in terms of space, but nearly 60 percent of the population of Minnesota resides in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The twin cities as they are called are a hub of transportation, business, and culture. Much of the rest of the state is farmland and is significantly less populated. Aside from Alaska, Minnesota is the northernmost state in the U.S., and it shares a border with Canada. The state is home to numerous professional sports teams, including an NFL, NBA, and MLB team. Popular activities in the state often center on outdoor fun like camping and fishing. Orchestra Hall and the Guthrie Theater are popular venues for live shows, and the Mall of America that brings in over 40 million people yearly is considered a must do for shoppers.
The state was admitted into the Union in 1858. Originally inhabited by the Dakota people, French fur traders were the first Europeans to venture into Minnesota. The land was acquired from local native tribes for the country by frontiersmen Zebulon Pike. The original American settlers were mostly natives of New England, leading to the states nineteenth-century nickname of “the New England of the west.” Originally a logging and farming region, today the local economy is quite diverse. The state produces finished products and services and has a booming business sector.
Home to the Marine Safety Office in Duluth, 369,000 veterans inhabit Minnesota.
The following military installations are located in Minnesota:
- Minneapolis–Saint Paul Joint Air Reserve Station (NAS Twin Cities)
