Known for the abundance of large mesas, Mesa County is located on the western side of Colorado. The county was once a flood plain with a humid climate, which made it a great environment for dinosaurs. The fossils of those dinosaurs are still found in Mesa County today. It is the site of many archaeological digs, not for just dinosaur fossils but also for ancient Fremont Indian artifacts.

The Grand Mesa is the largest mesa in the county. It is also the largest flat-topped mountain in the world. Most of the Grand Mesa is found within the Grand Mesa National Forest.
