Marion County was created on December 14, 1827, by the Georgia State Legislature. The county was named for General Francis Marion, a Patriot hero. Located on the western side of Georgia, Marion County was created from portions of Lee and Muscogee counties. Marion County has a total area of 367 square miles, 366 square miles of which is land, and 1.5 square miles of which is water. The total population of Marion County is 8,797, and the veteran population is 970. Marion County is small, quiet, and full of history.

The Marion County seat of Buena Vista was named for Zachary Taylor’s victory in the Mexican American War. Buena Vista was founded in 1830, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1920. Hall of Fame baseball player, Josh Gibson was born is Buena Vista as well as Medal of Honor recipient, Luther H. Story.

A popular tourist attraction in Marion County is Pasaquan, which is located near Buena Vista. Pasaquan is a seven-acre art compound. The compound was created by a folk artist named, Eddie Owens Martin. Owens died in 1986. Pasaquan consists of a redesigned 1885 farmhouse, painted concrete structures, and four acres of painted masonry concrete walls. The compound serves as a tribute to the creativity and artistry that exists in Marion County. The Pasaquan Preservation Society currently maintains Pasaquan.

Several locations in Marion County can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. The Old Marion County Courthouse was built in 1848 and is located in Tazewell, Ga. The other Marion County Courthouse, which is located in Buena Vista, was built in 1850 out of Marion County local brick. Other historic places in Marion County include Shiloh-Marion Baptist Church and Cemetery, Fort Perry, and the Drane-Stevens House.

Fort Benning is located just a short drive away from Marion County. The fort was built in 1918 and served as a basic training base for World War I units. Today, Benning houses several FORSCOM units, including the 14th Combat Support Hospital and the 11th Engineer Battalion. Disabled veterans are eligible for property tax exemption. The median housing cost is $87,000, and the median household income is $33,301.
