About Marin County
With the fifth-highest per capita income in the entire country, Marin County is known for its prosperity. Many high-tech companies call this county home. Perhaps juxtaposing one another are San Quentin Prison and the George Lucas owned Skywalker Ranch, both are among the more well-known landmarks of the area.
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area along the Pacific Ocean, the county was created in 1850 and named after Licatiut tribal chief Marin. Born as Huicmuse, Marin was re-christened Marino upon baptism. His exploits of bloody excursions against the Spanish as well as his service of the San Rafael Mission became legendary in the area following his death in 1839. Of further historical significance is the widespread belief that explorer Francis Drake first landed off the coast of Marin in 1579, though this has never been confirmed and as of 2003 has been partially discredited.
Annually, the county hosts the Dipsea Race which is the oldest cross country running event in the entire country. While Mountain biking was invented in Mount Tamalpais of Marin County. The beaches coupled with national protected areas including the Golden Gate National Rec Area, the Marin Islands Wildlife Refuge, and Point Reyes make the scenery a national gem.
