The County covers a total area of 893 square miles. The county is the presumed landing site of De Soto’s Expedition, although other counties have more square miles of water than Manatees, few have more historically significant ocean boundaries. To commemorate the Spaniards expedition, Bradenton has the De Soto National Memorial. The county is named after the Manatee native to the state, also known as the “sea cow.” Although it is endangered, the Manatee is the official marine mammal of Florida. The barrier island contains the cities of Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, and Anna Maria. The Island has a free trolley service that travels entirely around it for free. The trolley runs between 6 a.m. and 10 P.M. daily.
