About Lassen County

Located in the northeast portion of California, where the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountains come together with the desert of the Great Basin, Lassen County is known for its diverse natural offerings that provide many year-round activities.  If you’re looking for a place with clean air, low crime rates, minimal traffic congestion, and a lower cost of living, Lassen County is a place for you.

Residents enjoy a near-ideal climate: rainless, moderate days with cooler nights. Considered the “high desert,” Lassen County attracts lots of horseback riders and off-road vehicles.  Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park feature world-class winter activities including downhill and cross-country skiing as well as trails for snowmobiles and snowshoe hiking.

The area was formally known as a timber processing area and was part of California’s vibrant lumber industry. One of the biggest companies at the time was the Red River Lumber Company of Westwood, which had the world’s largest electrical sawmill.

The County’s rugged reputation extends back to its founding in April of 1864. When it came time to choose a name for the County, they decided to name it after Peter Lassen, a famous guide and trapper from the area. From these humble beginnings as a trappers’ and hunters’ outpost, Lassen has grown into a modern community without sacrificing the connection to the outdoors that brought people there in the first place.
