There are several locations in Knox County that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Old Main is the oldest building at Knox College and has been standing since the 1800s. Featuring Gothic Revival architecture, Old Main was the site of a senatorial debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The Galesburg Historic District features 1,049 historical buildings, some of which have been standing since the 1800s. On November 21, 1976, the Galesburg Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
