Veterans in Hawaii County
Hawaii County has a veteran population of 16,000. This populous has access too many veterans services provided in the county. The Office of Veterans Services has a satellite location in Hilo. The office helps veterans prepare VA claims, file appeals with the VA and review medical records. Additionally, the office works as an intermediary between veterans and the governor’s office, refers vets to alternate agencies and acts as a representation at VA hearings. The Hilo Office holds hours Monday through Friday, from 7:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Hilo Vet Center functions as a readjustment counseling center for veterans and their families who suffer from substance abuse and trauma related issues. The VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Hilo provides area veterans with health care and wellness services. The main purpose of the clinic is primary health care. The clinic is designed for non-emergent veterans who suffer from stable chronic problems and minor acute illnesses.
In addition to the veterans in Hawaii County, an active duty contingent is also noticeable. The Pohakuloa Training Area is found on the plateau between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. The facility is 170 square miles. First used during WWII by Marine Corps artillery units, the facility remains open today. The primary mission of the training center is to serve as a live fire training range for the ground and air units. The largest training area used by the Department of the Defense in the Pacific, small arms qualification, familiarization, artillery, and mortar training all conducted onsite. In 2009, the base was also revamped to serve as an impact area for bombing practice and helicopter aerial gunnery. The area is most frequently used as a training site for the 3rd Marine Regiment and the 25th Infantry Division. Interestingly, within the boundaries of the site are 10 endangered species of plant and animal life. Because of this, the facility is also officially recognized as a conservation district.
Disabled veterans, who own property in Hawaii County, are entitled to a property tax exemption of $5,000 if they suffer from a service-related total disability. Veterans with a 100 percent disability can also take advantage of the state of Hawaii Financing repairs, renovations and new construction or primary residences of $5,000 to make them more disability-friendly.
