Habersham County was named for Colonel Joseph Habersham. The county was officially created on December 15, 1818, and is made up of 279 square miles. Habersham County encompasses many of the adventurous locations in Georgia, including Tray Mountain and the Appalachian Trail. The county is perfect for adventurers, explorers, and those who just love the outdoors. Habersham also features great cities and towns with all the amenities you need. The population of Habersham County is 43,752, including a veteran population of 3,319.
Habersham County has excellent views of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountains are a great place for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and much more. The highest point of the county is a peak called Young Lick Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 3,800 square miles. The Blue Ridge Mountains are also a popular spot for activities such as ziplining and mountain climbing.
Fishing is a very popular activity in Habersham County. Thanks to the several large lakes, Habersham County is the perfect place for the avid fisherman. Nancy Town Lake was built in 1934 and is home to a large population of bass and bream. Over 2,000 trout are added to the lake annually by the Georgia Game and Fish Division. Other great lakes in Habersham County include Lake Russell and Lake Burton.
The Appalachian Trail, a 2,200-mile long trail that runs through many states of the East Coast, can partly be found in Habersham County. This trail is one of the most popular trails in the country for hikers. It is also the home to a diversity of plant and animal life. Habersham County is the site of many exciting festivals and fairs. The Chattahoochee Mountain Fair is the largest event in the county. The fair features a petting zoo, several rides, entertainment, and even a motorcycle show. The Chattahoochee Mountain Fair brings in over 20,000 people each year. Other great festivals held in Habersham County include the Big Red Apple Festival and the Mountain Laurel Festival.
Habersham County is home to the Veterans Wall of Honor. This wall contains the names of over 5,000 veterans from Habersham County. There is also a Veterans Service Office located in Clarkesville, Ga. Disabled veterans in Georgia may be eligible for property tax exemption.
