About Gunnison County
Gunnison County, Colorado was founded on March 9, 1877, and was named for a United States Army officer and captain in the Army Topographical Engineers named John W. Gunnison. Archeological studies have shown that Ute tribes have lived in the Gunnison County area since 1150 A.D. Gold was discovered in the area in 1858, which made the county a hub for miners. Gunnison County has a rich history of Western ranching.
Gunnison County has a perfect landscape for many outdoor activities. Visitors from all over the country come to Gunnison for the multitude of skiing and hiking options. “Cattlemen’s Days,” the oldest rodeo celebration in Colorado, is held in Gunnison County. “Cattlemen’s Days” is held every year and features bull riding and barrel racing.
Gunnison County is home to the Paonia State Park. This park is located in a canyon that surrounds the Paonia Reservoir. It is over 1,857 acres and offers many park facilities, including campsites, picnic sites, and a boat ramp. Mule deer, elk, and cottontail rabbit are just a few of the species of wildlife that live in Paonia State Park.
Mt. Crested Butte is a great place in Gunnison County for a number of outdoor activities. The mountain is the location of a large ski resort that features excellent lodging, event venues, dining and shopping options, and much more. Mt. Crested Butte is also the location of Adventure Park, where visitors can zip line over the area.
