About Garfield County

Garfield County, Colorado was named for the former United States President James A. Garfield. The county has an area of 2,956 miles. Land makes up 2,948 square miles of Garfield County and water makes up 2,948 square miles.

The county has a number of protected areas including the Grand Mesa National Forest, the Rifle Falls State Park, the Routt National Forest, and much more. Flat Tops Wilderness Area is located in Garfield County. Flat Tops is the third largest U.S. Wilderness Area in Colorado. The area is comprised of over 118,230 acres of forest.

Grand Mesa National Forest is also located in Garfield County. This forest has a total area of 346,555 acres. It was created by Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States, on Dec. 24, 1892. It is an excellent area to take in the majestic views that Colorado has to offer. It is also home to the largest flattop mountain in the world.

In the 21st century, the County’s economy is mainly centered around its hospitality and tourism industries since the Colorado Mountains attract many visitors every year. When it comes to residents, the most common employment industries in the County are the Construction, Healthcare, and Retail Trade industries. Therefore, the most common jobs are in the construction, management, and office administration occupations.
