About Fremont County

Fremont County, Colorado was named for an American military officer, explorer, and politician named John Charles Fremont. It was founded in 1861. The county is home to the first prison built in Colorado.

Fremont County is the location of the picturesque Royal Gorge Canyon. Visitors to the gorge come to view were Ute Indians and Spanish Conquistadors once explored. Fremont offers a number of museums to showcase its rich history. The Canon City Municipal Museum and the Silver Cliff Museum are just a few of the museums that you can find in Fremont County.
