Fremont County, Colorado was named for an American military officer, explorer, and politician named John Charles Fremont. It was founded in 1861. The county is home to the first prison built in Colorado.
Fremont County is the location of the picturesque Royal Gorge Canyon. Visitors to the gorge come to view where Ute Indians and Spanish Conquistadors once explored. Fremont offers a number of museums to showcase its rich history. The Canon City Municipal Museum and the Silver Cliff Museum are just a few of the museums that you can find in Fremont County.
Fremont is famous for its collection of beautiful canyons and relaxing hot springs. The county even brought in early filmmakers, such as Tom Mix, a famous silent film cowboy star. Several films have been made in Fremont County since. Several scenic bicycle trails pass through Fremont County, including the American Discovery Trail, the TransAmerica Trail Bicycle Route, and the Western Express Bicycle Route.
Col. Leo Sidney Boston War Memorial Park is located at the Fremont County Airport. The memorial wall consists of 2,119 bricks with the names of 1,633 veterans engraved.
