About Fremont County

Fremont County, Colorado was named for an American military officer, explorer, and politician named John Charles Fremont. It was founded in 1861. The county is home to the first prison built in Colorado.

Fremont County is the location of the picturesque Royal Gorge Canyon. Visitors to the gorge come to view were Ute Indians and Spanish Conquistadors once explored.
