Elbert County, Georgia was named for American merchant and soldier, Samuel Elbert and was officially created on December 10, 1790. Elbert is a very historic county with several landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The total area of the county is 374 square miles, 351 miles is land and 23 miles is water. The county lies on the border with South Carolina.
Many granite monuments and colonial homes can be found in Elbert County. The county is an excellent place to absorb the history of Georgia. The Rucker House is a residence in Elbert County that was built on January 12, 1788. Another historic building is the Rock Gym. The Rock Gym was built in 1941 and was used as an armory for the National Guard. The gym is now being used as the Elberton-Elbert County Conference Center and Museum. Other historical places include the Granite Bowl, the Stephen Heard Cemetery, and the Dan Tucker gravesite.
Elbert County has several excellent parks, perfect for a day outside. The Bobby Brown State Park is 665 acres. The park is home to two reservoirs and is also where the Broad River and Savannah River meet. The many bodies of water make Bobby Brown State Park a great place for boating and fishing. Russell State Park is another great park located in Elbert County. The park is located on the shore of Lake Russell and features many picnic shelters.
The Georgia Guidelines is a large granite monument that features a set of 10 guidelines inscribed in eight modern languages and four ancient ones. The structure has earned the name of the “American Stonehenge.” The Georgia Guidelines are over 19 feet tall.
