Elbert County was created from the eastern portions of Douglas County on Feb. 2, 1874. The county is named for Samuel Hitt Elbert, the former Governor of the Territory of Colorado.
Elbert County is home to the Elbert County Museum. Built in 1991, the Elbert County Museum houses artifacts and exhibits showcasing early life on the Smoky Hill Trail. The museum offers weekly events for children and adults.
The county has a surface area of 1,851 square miles. Land makes up 1,851 miles, and water makes up 0.2 miles of the area. Elbert County has a population of 24,195 citizens with 2,328 of those being veterans. The median household income is about $82,118, and the median housing cost is $333,600.
Elbert County offers many services to its veterans.
