About Eagle County

Eagle County is named for the 60.5-mile-long Eagle River that joins the Colorado River in western Eagle County. The county was created by the Colorado Legislature on Feb. 11, 1883.  Made from portions of Summit County, Eagle boasts a surface area of 1,692 square miles. The Ground Hog Mine, located in a small town in Eagle County, once produced large amounts of gold and silver.

Eagle County is located in the visually striking Rocky Mountains. This makes it the perfect place to take in mountain views and relax by flowing rivers and streams. The county is also the home of several hiking trails, including the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.

A large portion of the county is made up of the White River National Forest. There are several areas great for skiing and hiking in this forest. It is also the site of eight officially designated wilderness areas.

When it comes to education, the County is served by the Eagle County School District No. RE-50 includes about twenty schools educating about 6,800 students from kindergarten to high school. At an average of fifteen students for every teacher, schools in the County can provide higher quality and more focused education for students who have different learning ways.

People who enjoy the outdoors will be happy to hear that Eagle County is also home to several protected wildlife areas and scenic trails. Eagle County residents and visitors can enjoy its natural beauty by visiting the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, Eagles Nest Wilderness, and Sylvian Lake State Park. The County is also home to a fun atmosphere due to its annual Eagle County Fair & Rodeo.
