About Douglas County
Douglas County is well known for its abundance of mesas, foothills, and small streams. It was one of the original 17 counties to be created in Colorado by the Colorado Territorial Legislature. Douglas County gets its name from U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas.
The county offers a large number of parks and recreational areas. One of the most popular parks is Castlewood Canyon State Park. Castlewood boasts many hiking trails and mountain climbing opportunities. The park is also home to many different species of wildlife, including cottontail rabbits, black bears, prairie falcons, golden eagles, and much more.
Educationally speaking, Douglas County is home to one school district in Douglas County School District No. RE-1. This school district has 93 schools that educate about 67,591 students from kindergarten to high school; when it comes to higher education, the University of Phoenix-Colorado, and Rocky Vista University, where most students get degrees in business administration, registered nursing, and behavioral sciences.
Furthermore, outside of school and work, enjoy the great outdoors at one of the beautiful locations in Douglas County. There are multiple scenic trails in the county, where you can enjoy excellent views of the landscape while at the same time exercise. Some of these trails include the Colorado Trail, Devils Head National Recreation Trail, Highline Canal National Recreation Trail.
