About Delta County

Delta County is located at the confluence of the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers. The county gets its name from a piece of land located at the mouth of the Uncompahgre River. The county was originally used as a trading post for early settlers in Colorado.

Visitors and residents enjoy the rich history Delta County possesses. At the Delta County History Museum, you can find many artifacts from the early pioneer days. The museum also contains wooden silos, which are the last remaining structures of a cattle ranch established in the early 1800s, called Bar I Ranch.

The biggest employment industries in the county are healthcare, retail trade, and construction. Therefore, the most common occupations in the county are in the management, construction, and sales occupations.

In addition to the workforce, the county is home to strong educational institutions all under one school district, the Delta County Joint School District No. 50. With a total of eighteen schools, the district educates about 4,998 students every year. Higher educational opportunities are also available within the county with the Delta Montrose Technical College where most students get degrees in the criminal justice and secretarial science concentrations.
