Located in the center of Idaho, Custer County is a rural mountain area with excellent scenery and friendly people. The county was named after the General Custer Mine, which is where gold was discovered. The Idaho State Legislature established the county in 1881. The largest mountain peak in the Lost River Range is Borah Peak, which stands at an elevation of 12,661 ft. For hikers of all skills sets, there is a multitude of hiking trails in the Lost River Range. The peaks in Lost River provide some of the best views you can find in Idaho. If you love nature, then the Lost River Range is a can’t miss! Pass Creek Summit is a favorite of hang gliders.
Redfish Lake is a majestic lake with a total surface area of 6,547 feet, located in Custer County. Providing some of the best fishing opportunities in Idaho, Redfish Lake brings in fishers from all over the state. The lake also features the Redfish Lake Lodge, which is home to a restaurant, cabin, and boat rental service. The numerous boat ramps at Redfish Lake make it an excellent location for people who love boating, canoeing, and other water sports. If you love camping, then there are many campsites located around Redfish Lake.
Custer County has a thriving school system featuring accredited teachers and several programs for children of all ages. Mackay High School is home to the Miners, who have won ten football state championships. Other sports teams offered by the high school include volleyball, baseball, basketball, track, and more.
