John Bidwell was famous throughout the country during the nineteenth century as leading one of the first explorations made by Americans along the California Trail. A Prohibition Party presidential candidate and overall supporter of the temperance movement, Bidwell was the recipient of the Rancho Colus Mexican land grant which would eventually become the inspiration of the name Colusa County.

Established in 1850 as one of the original 18 counties of California, the etymology of the name derives from the original native people who lived in the area, over the years the spelling of the county name has changed from Colusi to Coluse and then finally what it is known as today, Colusa.

Colusa County is in northwest California in the Central Valley; the county is adjacent to Yolo County, Lake County, Glenn County, and Butte County. Primarily Republican-leaning, a democrat hasn’t won the county in a presidential election since 1964.
