Do I need Flood Insurance?
- The VA requires properties are required to have flood insurance if they are in a Special Flood Hazard Area.
- In addition to floodplains along rivers and the bay, much of Contra Costa County–particularly the unincorporated areas –are at risk from flash floods. That being said, there many regions, such as much of the city of Antioch, that are not located in flood hazard areas. In addition, thanks to its floodplain management program, residents of Contra Costa County receive a 25% reduction to their flood insurance premiums.

- There are a total of seventeen cities and two towns in Contra Costa with the city of Martinez serving as the county seat. The sixteen other cities are Antioch, Brentwood, Clayton, Concord, El Cerrito, Hercules, Lafayette, Oakley, Orinda, Pinole, Pittsburg, Pleasant Hill, Richmond, San Pablo, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek. The two towns in the county are Danville and Moraga.
About Contra Costa County
Contra Costa County is home to over one million residents, making it the ninth-largest county in California. The largest city is Concord, and other top cities include Antioch, Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Danville, Pleasant Hill, and the county seat, Martinez. All in all, Contra Costa County has 19 cities and many communities in the unincorporated area.
Life in Contra Costa County revolves around the waterfront. Whether it is the agricultural areas inland, the commuters that travel across the bay, or the fishing and shipping industries, the Contra Costa waterways play a central part of daily life in the county.
Although the county is no longer mainly agricultural, in Moraga and the eastern part of the county, there are still many fruit trees. Contra Costa County is also home to heavy industry, such as the oil refineries in Richmond and Martinez, and the Dow chemical plant.
The area is connected to the rest of the bay area through BART. In fact, BART was extended to Antioch in the spring of 2018, making it accessible to most of Contra Costa County. Indeed, many commuters choose to live here as an affordable alternative to San Francisco.
Contra Costa County also boasts a rich history. The county is known for its pre-historic fossils. In addition, it was founded at the same time California became a state, back in 1850. Initially, it was going to be called Mt. Diablo County, after its most striking natural landmark. However, they opted for “contra costa” instead, which means “opposite coast.” Today, Mt. Diablo is a state park with over 1,200 miles of trails –a great place for hiking, biking, and enjoying views of the entire Bay Area.
