Named for a former United States House of Representative member, Augustin Clayton, Clayton County was officially established in 1858. The county is home to the largest portion of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The surface area of Clayton County is around 144 square miles, making it the third-smallest county in Georgia. Clayton County has a strong art community. Many cultural events are held in Clayton thanks to Arts Clayton, Inc. Clayton County is also home to the Clayton County Schools Performing Arts Center. Spivey Hall has had performances from classical, world, and jazz musicians. Fort Gillem is located in Clayton County. The fort was once the headquarters of the First U.S. Army. In 2005 it was recommended that the fort be closed, but the criminal forensic laboratory is still open.
