About Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County, Colorado is named after its first inhabitants, the Cheyenne Indians. The county was created by the Colorado State Legislature on March 25, 1889. The county has a land area of 1,782 square miles. Cheyenne is one of the least-populated counties in Colorado.

Cheyenne County is the home to many historic trails. The Old Military Trail in Cheyenne connects Fort Wallace in Kansas to Fort Lyon, which is located on the Arkansas River in Colorado. The Smoky Hill Trail was used by pioneers searching for gold in Denver. This trail was also used as hunting grounds for the Cheyenne Indians.

There are a number of historical sites located in Cheyenne County. These sites include the Cheyenne County Courthouse, built in 1908, and the Old Cheyenne Jail, built in 1894. The Wild Horse School, which was built in 1912, also still stands in Cheyenne County.

Furthermore, the County remains small, with most people having jobs in agriculture, educational services, and health care, leading to most residents holding positions in the management, office administration, and transportation. The County is also home to Ladder Creek Helium Plant, one of only fourteen Helium plants worldwide.
