Established on January 23, 1915, Benewah County is located on the western edge of Idaho. The county was named after a chief of the Coeur d’Alene Native American Tribe. The county encompasses 784 square miles, 777 of which is land, and 7.3 square miles of which is water. Home to several state parks and a national protected area, Benewah County, provides excellent views of the Idaho landscape. The total population of Benewah County is 9,118, including a veteran population of 1,019.
Heyburn State Park is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Idaho. Founded in 1908, Heyburn State Park in the second oldest park located in the Pacific Northwest. For the best camping, picnicking, and hiking experiences, be sure to visit Heyburn State Park. Other popular activities in the park include horseback riding and mountain biking. Heyburn State Park overlooks Lake Coeur d’Alene. The lake is home to bass, pike, pan, and many other species of fish, making it the perfect place to take out the boat and enjoy a relaxing day of fishing. The park is open year-round, so you enjoy it in all seasons!
Part of the St. Joe National Forest is located in Benewah County. The forest totals 867,882 acres of land. The St. Joe River flows through the forest, which provides excellent opportunities for fishing and canoeing. The St. Joe National Forest is home to a diversity of plant and animal life, making it a great place to explore for nature lovers.
McCroskey State Park is the other state park located in Benewah County. Like Heyburn State Park, McCroskey State Park provides some of the best views in the state. With around 32 miles of trails, the park is a favorite of local hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. All-terrain vehicles are also allowed on most of the trails. Views of the majestic Rocky Mountains can be seen from most areas in the park. Deer, moose, black bears, and many other species of animals can be found within McCroskey State Park.
