First inhabited by the Anasazi people, Archuleta County is a picturesque area surrounded by mountains, forests, and streams. Archuleta County was created by the Colorado legislature on April 14, 1885. Named for J. M. Archuleta, “head of one of the old Spanish families of New Mexico,” the county spans over 1,356 miles. Around 1,350 miles of that is land, and 5.3 miles is water.
Archuleta County contains four nationally protected forests and two scenic hiking trails. It is also home to the Navajo State Park, which has a great view of the San Juan River and the San Juan Mountains.
Archuleta County offers a number of benefits for veterans, including medical, education, pensions for veterans and widows, and burial allowances.
