About Archuleta County

Archuleta County, Colorado, was established in 1885 from parts of Conejos County and was named after Antonio Don Archuleta, a former member of the Colorado Senate from 1876 to 1887. The County was originally home to the Anasazi people who lived in the area hundreds of years before European arrival, with archeological evidence pointing to the area being lived in by earlier people until about 1125 AD.

In modern times, the County is a small town with a small population and an economy where most residents have jobs in the Retail, Construction, and Educational Service industries. With most residents working in the management, sales, and construction occupations.

The County is home to one school district, Archuleta County School District No. 50-JT. This school district has a total of four schools and about 1,706 students every year. Schools in the County have the advantage that the student to teacher ratio is 17 to 1 on average, enabling teachers to have a more personalized curriculum for students to perform better.

In addition to schools, the County is also home to several other educational institutions like the Pagosa Springs History Museum, Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum, and Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad & Museum. Visitors to these places can learn about the County’s culture and history. 

Furthermore, Archuleta County is home to some beautiful vistas available by visiting one of the many campgrounds available. These parks are the beautiful Williams Creek Reservoir, Navajo State Park, and Pagosa Riverside Campground.
