Decatur County was created on December 8, 1823, by the Georgia General Assembly. The county was created from a portion of Early County, and was named for United State Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur. Stephen Decatur was a hero in the War of 1812. Decatur County is made up of 597 square miles of land and 26 square miles of water.
