Winston County, located in northern Alabama, was formed in 1850 and was originally called Hancock County.
During the Civil War, Winston County drew attention to itself for being against separation from the Northern states. The county’s land was not fitting for plantations because of its hilly landscape, so slavery was not so much a part of this county. While visiting here, you can see dramas put on by locals portraying the internal battle from the Civil War. There is also a popular statue of a soldier dressed half as a Confederate and half as a Union soldier.
There is a National Guard location and State Military Department both located in Haleyville.
